Public Comment Sought for Recycling in Unincorporated Clatsop County

Clatsop County Board of Commissioners is seeking public comment on a proposed franchise agreement for recycling service from Recology Western Oregon and Waste Management of Oregon.

Public comment may be made in-person at the May 8, 2024 Board of Commissioners meeting or in writing at ClatsopCounty.gov. A vote will take place on that date, and if approved, that will end the public comment process.

Recology and Waste Management currently provide curbside garbage pickup in Unincorporated Clatsop County. The new franchise agreements will add curbside recycling to the service.

“Recycling services will be rolled out over the next three to 18 months, depending on who your solid waste provider is,” said Anthony Pope, Clatsop County Counsel. “We want to make sure customers know the new recycling fee will only be charged when the service begins.”

Clatsop County Voices: Dan Hess - Part 1

Clatsop County has been collecting your stories for our Clatsop County Voices campaign.

Sawyer and Sven Houseknecht interviewed their great-grandfather Dan Hess. Dan's family homesteaded about 400 acres of farmland in Astoria, out on what is now known as Wireless Rd. along the river in 1889.

In Part 1 of the interview, the boys asked their great-grandpa about the fun things he did on the homestead, about drag racing, being a longshoreman and more.

Dan also talks about the homestead but we'll put that in part 2.

We invite residents to send stories and photos of family memories that have been passed through generations or a personal recollection of a major event that happened in Clatsop County.

Share your story four ways:

  1. Call 503-325-7870 and record your story
  2. Record a conversation with a family member and upload the audio file
  3. Email communications@clatsopcounty.gov to request an interview
  4. Write up your story and send it to: Clatsop County; 800 Exchange St., Suite 410; Astoria, OR 97103 or communications@clatsopcounty.gov

Stories will be posted through June 30 at the Clatsop County Voices webpage. After that the County will donate them to the Clatsop County Historical Society.

For more information, visit ClatsopCounty.gov.
